Prodi and Berlusconi call on EU for unity

Rome, 31/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - After their meeting last Friday in Rome, the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, and the Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, issued a press release stressing the need for Europe to overcome its current divergence and division (mainly caused by the Iraqi crisis). According to the press release, the EU must be able to speak with a single voice on the international scene while preserving the special and privileged nature of the transatlantic link. It is necessary for Member States to work together and to no longer be divided, commented Mr Berlusconi, who anticipated good cooperation with the Commission and its president during the term of office of the Italian Presidency. Mr Prodi also met President Ciampi, among others.
