Brussels, 06/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Social Council has approved two reports which will be sent as its contribution to the Spring Summit: the joint Commission/Council report on viable and adequate pensions and the report on health care for the elderly. Ministers have therefore for the first time analysed all the pension systems in Member States and taken into account social indicators as well as the problems of an ageing populating. During the debate, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Denmark and Germany insisted on the use of the open coordination method in the area of pensions. Spain requested respect for national strategies and to be careful with the indicators, which are not yet totally accurate. Italy presented its White Paper on Welfare. At lunch, Ministers proved their willingness to obtain a political agreement on the temporary work directive for the Social Summit in June.
