Brussels, 05/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Environment Council on Tuesday discussed the future strategy to protect the marine environment in the framework of the sixth action programme for the environment. The conclusions adopted closely follows the Commission's guidelines set out in its December 2002 Communication. The Council took note of a Commission report on civil protection coordinated by the Commission to help Spain cope with the environmental impact of the shipwreck of the Prestige oil tanker. Spain reported back on what it has done to clean up beached and save birdlife. France wants a satellite monitoring system for oil slicks at sat to be set up at Community level. Finland and Sweden draw attention to the need to step up maritime security in the Baltic.
