Mrs Paciotti asks for report on entry into force of American AccEs to airline company databases

Brussels, 04/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - Democratici di Sinistra MEP Elena Paciotti has joined Stefano Rodata, chairman of the working group on data protection, in asking for the report on the entry into force- set for this Wednesday 5 March- of the authorisation of the US immigration service for access to data on European airlines' passengers travelling to America (see yesterday's Europe, p.10). It will also allow them access to highly personal information (dietary requirements, for instance, which may reveal religious beliefs), notes the European Parliament, pointing out that under US law, these data can be transferred to other federal institutions. The "understandable concerns about terrorism" do not justify the EU in accepting measures which are in clear breach of the 1995 European Directive on data protection and which violate a fundamental right of European citizens enshrined in Article 8 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, says Mrs Paciotti, who has requested the Parliament to look into the situation.
