Brussels, 04/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Group of Commissioners for Equal Opportunities (set in place in 1995 by President Jacques Santer so that equal opportunities between men an women would become the main theme of Commission action) is meeting on Wednesday 5 March in Brussels (from 12h30 to 15h00) under the aegis of President Romano Prodi. In addition to Commissioners Verheugen (enlargement), Vitorino (justice/home affairs), Barnier (regional policy) and Diamantopoulou (social affairs), participants will include representatives of the European Parliament, the Greek Presidency and the future Italian Presidency, the European Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of the Regions, and the advisory committee on equal opportunities and the European Women's Lobby. Discussions will cover: 1) equal opportunities and enlargement; 2) the Convention on the Future of Europe and gender equality; 3) gender equality and the information society; 4) the role of women in political life; and 5) domestic violence.
