Brussels, 03/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Secretary General of the United Nations wants to organise separate simultaneous referenda on 30 March on the UN reunification plan. He urges Greek and Turkish Cypriots to give their definitive responses by 10 March on the idea of organising such referenda. The two leaders, Rauf Denktash and Tassos Papadopoulos will meeting Kofi Annan in The Hague on 10 March. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Kofi Annan said this was "a unique opportunity that must not be missed", adding "there should be no doubt that we are at the end of the road" and this was the last chance for Cyprus to be reunified (it has been divided since 1974) before the signature of the Treaty of Accession to the EU on 16 April. If either party opposes the organisation of the referenda, "It will be a sad day for the people of this island, for both communities and for the region", warning "we have to be very careful not to think that there is a lot of time and one can continue business as usual".
