GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/convention/poverty

25/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - On the eve of the continuation of the European Convention's works (plenary of 27 and 28 February), the European solidarity association Fourth World is launching an appeal for mobilisation for the issues of the eradication of sever poverty and the promotion of social inclusion to be included in the central aims of the EU, in paragraph 2 of Article 3 of the future Treaty. If the eradication of sever poverty in Europe is not explicitly among the first articles that define the aims of the Union, the fight against poverty and social exclusion will lack a solid foundation, explains the association in a press release, while regretting: this would represent a step backwards in the light of the Lisbon European Council and the Treaty of Nice in 2000. The association also underlines that the aim of full employment is insufficient to guarantee the eradication of sever poverty and that Europe cannot assert its desire to contribute towards the ending of poverty in the world without asserting, at the same time, that it is pursuing this objective within its own borders.
