Brussels, 25/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has cleared the takeover of FlexPac, the flexible packaging division of Hydro Aluminium (subsidiary of Hydro Aluminium Deutschland GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Norsk Hydro ASA of Norway) by Alcan of Canada. The notification of the proposal foresees FlexPac merging with Alcan's own packaging division, once the operation is approved. Although the acquisition strengthens Alcan's share of the European flexible packaging market, the Commission concluded that there was no risk that Alcan Packaging would have a dominant position. Strong rivals such as Amcor of Australia, Austrian company Teich and Pechiney Soplaril of France and other large competitors will still be in the running.
