Brussels, 03/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - Malta's main opposition party, the Labour Party, has called on voters to vote against the country's EU membership during the referendum scheduled for 8 March this year. According to the Labour Party, Malta should seek to negotiate with the EU for a special "partnership", adapted to the needs of a small country and based on sector-specific agreements, mainly covering industrial free trade. The Maltese people will be the first of the ten candidate countries to take a stance on accession. The referendum, however, will not be binding for the government of La Valette.
We recall that the signing of the Accession Treaty is planned to take place on 16 April at the foot of the Acropolis, in Athens.
