Brussels, 31/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - "If military pressure on Baghdad is stepped up, Iraq will be more inclined to accept a peaceful solution without weapons being used", declared Turkish Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis, after his meeting with European leaders in Ankara on Friday, according to words reported by Reuters. Greek Foreign Minister Gorges Papandreou, his Italian counterpart, Franco Frattini and the European Commissioner for enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, were in Ankara on Friday as EU Troika (Commissioner Chris Patten will be there on 6 February: see p.8). The meeting mainly revolved around Iraq, but also Cyprus, already raised at a bilateral Yakis/Papandreou meeting. According to the Turkish press agency Anatolia, Yasar Yakis also declared that Turkey intended completing preparations to comply with the Copenhagen accession criteria by the end of the year.
