33 MEPs go to Baghdad

Brussels, 30/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - The French president of the GUE/NGL Group, Francis Wurtz; Belgian Green member Paul Lannoye, and Danish member of the Group of a Europe of Democracies and Diversities, Ulla Sandbaek, announced that 33 MEPs (14 GUE/NGL, 14 Greens/EFA, 3 PES and 2 EDD) will be going to Baghdad from 2 to 6 February. As specified on Tuesday evening by European Parliament President Pat Cox, this delegation has not received a mandate and will not be representing the institution (yesterday's EUROPE, p.5). "We represent a large majority opinion in each country, even in Spain and Portugal", Francis Wurtz stressed. MEPs will discuss the situation on the ground with non-governmental organisations. "We wish to show the Iraqi people that there are MEPs who are against the war", Mr Wurtz explained, adding that he hoped to be able to meet United Nations weapons inspectors.
