30/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a speech given in Brussels on Tuesday, Commissioner Antonio Vitorino again urged for the creation, in time, of a European border guard and for the cost of controlling the borders between the EU and third countries to be shared between Member States. "Within the intergovernmental Schengen cooperation, each Member State was financially responsible for setting up an efficient control system at the external border it was controlling on behalf of all participating States", the Commissioner recalls. It stresses that, for example, "Luxembourg only guards its airport as external borders; Germany and Austria control lengthy land borders; Greece surveys both external land borders and very important sea borders; Italy also carries out a huge task in surveying its sea borders".
