Strasbourg, 17/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - By approving a resolution on the humanitarian crisis in North Korea, at the end of emergency debate on Thursday, the European Parliament welcomed the fact that on 8 January the Commission decided to grant humanitarian aid of 9.5 million euro intended to partially meet the needs this winter of pregnant, women breast-feeding women and children in North Korea. It encourages the Commission to pursue its humanitarian actions and urges ECHO and the World Food Programme to continue to ensure that aid reaches those it is intended for. Parliament expresses its deep concern at the continued generalised violation of human rights and urges Pyongyang to instantly cease all threats of developing nuclear weapons, and revise its decision to pull out of the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, and to accept the international missions responsible for checking the sincerity of its intentions. The resolution renews the invitation to the Supreme People's Assembly to send a high-level delegation to the European Parliament in view of discussing food and humanitarian issues, as well as questions of mutual interest.
