17/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - By adopting the own-initiative report of Spanish socialist Rosa Miguélez Ramos on fishing in international waters, the European Parliament regrets that so far the action of the Community "is due more to heterogeneous casuistry than defending its interests and those of the fisheries sector". The Parliament is requesting the elaboration of a common fisheries policy linked to the Union's external, development and trade policies in order to get the principles of a responsible fishery policy that complies with the interests of the Community fleet evaluated in the different international bodies. The EP is also appealing for enhanced co-operation in the Mediterranean basin, the fight against illegal fishing and measures supporting the creation of joint companies with third countries.
