17/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by Belgian Christian Democrat Marianne Thyssen, the European Parliament amended at first reading (codecision) the Commission's proposal concerning application of international accounting standards to certain categories of firms and to insurance firms (amendments of Directives 78/660/EEC, 83/349/EEC and 91/674/EEC). The Parliament calls for this directive to also cover the 1986 Directive on bank accounts. It calls for the annual report presenting company accounts to contain a description of the main risks and uncertainties facing the companies. The Parliament also takes a stance in favour of abolishing the special accounting system currently in force for Lloyd's, which should thus be subject to the normal rules of the directive on accounting in insurance firms.
