Reviewing method of calculating GDP in 2005

Brussels, 15/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - The method of calculating the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the EU will be reviewed in 2005, it was announced on Wednesday by Gerassimos Thomas, spokesman for Pedro Solbes. He pointed out that the current method of calculation is based on 1995 prices and that the new method would be based on prices during the previous tax period. This change could therefore lead to reviewing the ratio of budgetary deficit and a country's indebtedness compared to its GDP. Although Member States may use the new method immediately, the calculation of GDP will continue to be based on 1995 prices until 2005, the spokesman said, specifying that discussions on control of deficit and budgetary policies will be based on the current harmonised data. On Tuesday, Silvio Berlusconi had said he was planning to review current criteria for calculating Italy's GDP, noting that the estimated increase of some 0.4% in 2002 did not seem to him to reflect other more positive economic indicators.
