Discussion about export obstacles for EU fruit and vegetables to several countries

Brussels, 15/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Freshfel Association has begun discussion with the European Commission concerning an access strategy for EU fresh fruit and vegetables exporters to markets in third countries. A report that the association presented last month to the Commission's Directorate General Agriculture, identifies the tariff and non-tariff obstacles currently blocking exports to the USA, China, Japan, Russia, India, Taiwan, Egypt and even Romania and Poland. This documents which also contains proposals, tackles issues such as the negotiation of free trade agreements, their implications for the sector in question, reciprocity (or its absence) for dealing with imports, market access conditions, EU enlargement, excessive phytosanitary requirements, export subsidies, actions for promoting European exports, as well as including fruit and vegetables in humanitarian aid programmes.
