Javier Solana gives warning

Brussels, 30/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Union is in close touch with the other members of KEDO (South Korea, Japan and the United States) in the case of the reactivation of North Korean nuclear reactors, announced the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, in a statement released on 27 December. This crisis concerns the whole of the international community and "is neither a local issue nor an issue between North Korea and the US", added Mr Solana. He called on North Korea to reply to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) invitation to resume dialogue. And, noting that the EU recognises that North Korea has a power generation problem, he added: "But I do not believe that the solution to this problem is going to be found by unfreezing nuclear reactors. In fact, the only way forward is through North Korea's return to its commitment under the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) and to de-nuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula." Mr Solana urged the North Korean authorities to "do this in a visible and viable manner". And finally, the CFSP High Representative noted that "the European Union has been encouraged by the developments in its dialogue and cooperation with North Korea. Such positive developments could be jeopardised by such actions as North Korea has taken now."
