30/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament endorsed the view of its rapporteur Eija Riitta Korhola (EPP-ED, Finland), on 18 December, recommending that it approve the common draft approved by the Conciliation Committee on public access to environmental information. The purpose was to repeal the Directive of 7 June 1990 to remedy certain weaknesses in its implementation and adapt it to technological developments, and to harmonise Community law to enable the Community to ratify the Arhus Convention, the Convention of the UN Economic Commission for Europe on public access to information and justice on environmental matters, signed in 1998 (see EUROPE of 8 December, p. 14).
