Brussels, 20/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the Council of Ministers adopted (without debate) the new fisheries agreement between the EU and Senegal, which covers the period from 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2006. The financial compensation is set at EUR 16 million annually. The protocol sets out fishing opportunities for 55 tuna fishing vessels (31 Spanish and 24 French) and 23 surface long-liners: 10,000-8,000 GRT gross registered tons for demersal species (deep sea fish); 2,131 - 1,500 GRT for coastal demersal species; GRT 7,869-6,500 for all very deep sea fish. The EU has withdrawn its request to fish pelagic species (living in intermediate sea levels). The fishing activities of Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Greek fishing fleets are mainly for tuna Nordic shrimps, demersal species such as hake and high sea level fish such as groupers and cephalopods.
