THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/colombia

10/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - The EU Council adopted conclusions on the basis of the effort made by Colombian President Uribe to find a negotiated solution to the conflict in Colombia, fight against terrorism and drug trafficking and make a democratic State work throughout its territory. It calls for strengthening of the EU work programme in order to contribute, above all, to "solutions allowing drug production to be replaced". At the same time, it expresses its concern about the worsening of the humanitarian and human rights situation and urges the government to step up its effort in these fields and to take effective measures against impunity and collusion. The Council welcomes the reforms announced by President Uribe to tackle social inequality, and calls on the Colombian Government to take into account the role of the civil society and of non-governmental organisations, in order to successfully complete these reforms and to progress along the road to negotiated settlement of the internal armed conflict.
