Brussels, 29/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - Following a meeting in Brussels with the Estonian President, Mr Rüütel on Thursday, President Prodi launched a public appeal to the ten candidate countries with whom the EU is hoping to conclude negotiations in Copenhagen, to accept the recent compromise proposals from the Danish Presidency (see EUROPE 28 November). Mr Prodi declared that they were just a few days away from concluding an historic agreement for Europe. He stated that he would be surprised if there were still points pending at this stage of negotiations. The Danish Presidency and the Commission have made courageous efforts to present the package with almost all the issues, Mr Prodi explained. He called on the leaders of the candidate countries to demonstrate political realism and contribute to resolving these last difficulties in the same spirit of responsibility and friendship that inspired the Presidency and the Commission.
