Brussels, 12/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Greens/EFA Group jointly headed by Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Monica Frassoni is organising for 13 November at the European Parliament, in Brussels, a conference on freedom of the press in the EU. It will then put an oral question to the Commission on 18 November in Strasbourg. Mr Cohn-Bendit denounces the concentration of the media which threatens pluralism in Italy, in the United Kingdom and in some candidate countries, and Ms Frassoni stresses that, according to a worldwide index on freedom of the press published by Reporters without Borders, Italy ranks 40th, after Benin. These questions can no longer be reserved for national policy and call for regulation at Community level, Mercedes Echerer, Austrian Green member, states. Participants at the conference included Freimut Duve (OSCE), the author Andrea Camilleri, producers Völker Schlöndorff and Robert Guédiguian, and journalist Christine Ockrent.
