Under terms of contract concluded with Belgium, Commission should return to Berlaymont in 2004

Brussels, 23/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - Wednesday afternoon, the European Commission and Belgian Government concluded the contract laying down the conditions for the Commission's return to its Berlyamont headquarters. This contract meets of the conditions of the memorandum of understanding signed by the two parties in July 2001: it provides for a date for delivery and a set price, and comprises a certain number of guarantees for the signatories. The date for delivering the basic building is 31 December 2003 and those for the additional work requested by the Commission are 31 March and 30 June 2004. The Commission's share of the cost of renovation is set at €503.3 million, including 35.6 million for additional work aimed at guaranteeing that the building will be adapted to an enlarged Union. As agreed in 1997, the Commission will acquire the building's structure for an amount set at 49.6 million and the land for a symbolic sum of 1 euro. EUROPE will return.
