Brussels, 08/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - Gerardo Galeote (Partido popular) briefed the EP's foreign affairs committee on Tuesday on the conclusions of his fact-finding mission to Morocco during the recent legislative elections. Mr. Galeote, who was accompanied by Paul Couteaux (EDD) and Francesco Fiori (EPP), stressed that "for the first time, in Morocco, an electoral process was conducted in a regular fashion and democratically", which is "the reflection of a clear will" on the part of the Moroccan Government. The only criticism regarded the delay in the official announcement of the results of the ballot. In a short debate, the general opinion was that they needed to remain attentive to developments in the country, marked by the emergence of an "Islamic" Party, and that action was needed to improve the lot of women.
