Brussels, 07/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with the Financial Times, the Chairman of the European Convention, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, said he hoped that the upcoming IGC would make as few changes as possible to the plans he would be presenting to the Convention. "If the work has been sufficiently perfected, four or five meetings of prime ministers or foreign secretaries should be able to finish things off," he said. "But not a big diplomatic debate reopening things." On rebranding the EU, the FT reports that VGE prefers the term "United Europe", saying "'United' is a strong word", conceding that alternatives such as 'United States of Europe' could create reservations (see Europe on 3 October, p.3). When asked whether he himself might become a future President of Europe, VGE told the FT: "No, it's impossible, my age will prevent me… Unless there is a dramatic advance in medical science."
