Strasbourg, 26/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - In reaction to the campaign launched by British Conservative Jonathan Evans to keep the EP bases uniquely in Brussels, Margie Sudre and Joseph Daul, French members of the EPP group replied that, "If British Conservative members of the EP do not want to respect the treaties, they should be called on to leave the European Parliament" (see Europe yesterday p 15, and p 16 in today's issue). The two MEPs are calling on the European Convention to include a clause in the future European Constitution where Member States that do not respect the treaties can withdraw from the Union and "if needs be, be excluded" (the project of British Liberal, Andrew Duff, already suggests such a right of secession: Editor's note). Ms Sudre and Mr Daul point out that the Protocol annexed to the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1997 outlined that the headquarters of the EP was "in Strasbourg, where twelve monthly plenary sessions take place, including the budgetary session. Joseph Daul from the Alsace acknowledges the transport difficulties for MEPS travelling to Strasbourg and explains that he, "is the first to take action at municipal, regionaal and national authority level to improve the situation, a situation where millions of Londoners living in the suburbs spend hours on the tube in the mornings and evenings… and who would willingly swap with their MEPs"
