Argentina attacks European wine policy

Brussels / Geneva, 16/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - Argentina has launched an all-out attack in Geneva against several aspects of European policy on the production and commerce of wine. A request for consultation, opening the dispute settlement procedure, was endorsed just before the weekend by the relevant WTO body. Buenos Aires considers certain provisions contained in the EU regulation, as well as other policies and procedures relating to the administration and common market organisation of wine, the establishment of wine-producing practices authorised and regulations governing trade with third countries are incompatible with the Union 's obligations in the context of the WTO, either as a text or in application. The Multilateral Agreement on Technical Trade Barriers, GATT 1994 and the Agriculture Agreement were invoked to denounce the restrictions imposed on some wines of whatever origin (requirements that are more restrictive than necessary for production), not taking into account certain international resolutions (OENO) in the requirements to be respected for the acidification of wines and bilateral agreements subscribed to with certain third countries, the advantage of which is not extended to other members.
