Brussels, 16/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - Last week, three young German Greens handed in a 24 article "draft for a democratic European constitution" to the co-president of the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament, Daniel Cohen-Bendit, who, according to a press release, regarded it as "visionary" and announced that he would be presenting it as contribution from the Greens to the European Convention. Saying he was concerned by the resurgence of rightist ideas in Europe, the German Green, elected in France, placed emphasis, according to the press release, on a strengthening of the European Union to prevent the development of nationalist tendencies.
"Our progressive draft articulates the pro-European ideas of our generation", explained Anna Luhrmann, of the Bundnis 90/Die Grunen, who is the youngest candidate in the elections to the Bundestag on 22 September. She herself and her friends, Jan Seifert (spokesman for the Greens of Schleswig-Holstein) and Omid Nouripour (spokesman for the Grune Jugend Hessen) call in particular for the President of the European commission to be directly elected by the European Parliament and for the European Economic and Social Committee to be replaced by a "Council on Sustainability" (See text on: http://www.forwardstudies.net ).
