Joint contribution from environmental defence organisations

Brussels, 10/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - In their joint contribution, the NGOs BirdLife International, Climate Action Network Europe, the European Environment Bureau, Friends of Nature International, European Federation for Transport and Environment, Friends of the Europe Europe, Greenpeace and WWF above all insist on maintaining clear objectives for the protection of the environment and for the promotion of sustainable development. They call for an amendment to Article 33 of the Treaty so that the Common Agriculture Policy and the Common Fisheries Policy may be redirected towards quality production, protection of the environment and health and the promotion of rural development. Recalling the difficulties encountered over the CO2 tax, the NGOs calls for the rule of unanimity when voting in Council to be abandoned on matters relating to the environment. They call for the Euratom Treaty to be abolished and are opposed to fixing an unchanging catalogue of Community competences. They also call for the possibilities offered to citizens and to associations to bring important Commission decisions before the Court of Justice to be extended.
