Copenhagen, 10/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the ECOFIN Council in Copenhagen at the weekend, the EU's economic and finance ministers broadly supported the strategy outlined by the European Commission for rationalising the coordination of economic and employment policies (see Europe of 4 September, p.10). In 2003 the Commission is planning to start presenting (in January and April) economic coordination instruments such as the Broad Economic Policy Guidelines (BEPG), employment strategies and reports on the internal market, explained Commissioner Pedro Solbes, adding that they were waiting fort he Council to complete its work under the Danish Presidency first. For the spring European Council, the Commission will publish (in one go) its spring report and reports in the implementation of economic coordination instruments. After the summit, it will publish guidelines including the BEPG, employment recommendations and the report on the internal market with the aim, explained the Commissioner, for improving the coordination and coherence of these policies and to concentrate on implementing them in the medium term. Ministers supported the idea of cutting the number of political guidelines documents, which will be published once every three years, and of focussing on their actual implementation. The President of the Council, Thor Pedersen, said the aim was to simplify the process and cut red tape.
