Brussels, 10/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - Last week during its 5th annual World Congress in Ottawa, the international trade union federation, Public Services International (PSI), launched a campaign for quality public services. The campaign will run for the next five years and receives the full support of ILO Director General Juan Somavia and of his organisation. "The fight in favour of quality public services is a battle for life itself. Only the public service has the possibility of providing public goods and services to everyone without taking his or her income or social status into account", said PSI President William Lucy, who presented the aims of the campaign. The aims are to: (1) guarantee that public services are adequately financed; (2) develop the capacity of public services to reach social objectives (and especially the fight in favour of eradicating poverty); (3) ensure that public services respect ethical criteria of a very high level; and (4) guarantee that public service workers fully benefit from their rights and from decent working conditions. We recall that PSI represents 20 million members in 146 countries.
