Brussels, 29/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - After the visit made from 26 to 28 August in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the joint mission of the parliamentary assemblies of the Council of Europe and the OSCE issued a declaration indicating that the members of the mission were impressed by the efficiency and professionalism shown by the electoral commission, and welcomed the balanced nature of its composition. We read in a press release that recalls the importance of the elections on 15 September 2002 that the assemblies reached the conclusion that the electoral law set in place conditions that were propitious for democratic elections. Overall, the campaign has been peaceful and constructive. Some interlocutors, however, have expressed a general feeling of insecurity concerning the electoral process but the electoral Commission assured that adequate measures would be taken to guarantee security. The mission, continues the press release, invites the relevant authorities to take the necessary measures. The mission adds that the members of the joint mission are, however, troubled by the assassination of two police officers, and express their condolences to the families. This criminal act must be unreservedly condemned by all political forces. The joint mission supports the relevant authorities which endeavour to shed light on this tragic event and to bring the perpetrators to justice. The mission sincerely hopes that this deplorable incident will not send the electoral process off course as, until this unfortunate event, it had taken place in a positive way. It appeals to the leaders of all political parties to refrain from all action likely to make the situation worse.
