Brussels, 06/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Friday the European Commission is expected to approve its amended proposal, by written procedure, to the "prospectus" directive harmonising information documents provided by companies when they are quoted on the stock exchange or during calls for tender. The adoption of this important proposal by written procedure has provoked some lively responses from the financial services sector, even more so given that the it is not expected to include the positions of the European Parliament and Council, which particularly requested that companies could chose the national authorities for surveillance to which it would make available their information documents. Last week associations from the financial services sector asked to be consulted before approval of the new proposal. In a letter to Commissioner Frits Bolkestein, they expressed their worries about the lack of transparency and consultation. In accordance with the commitments made at the Summit of Barcelona, the "prospectus" directive ought in principle to be adopted at the end of the year. "We are aware of the deadlines imposed by the Council. However, the signatories of the letter believe that the long-term impact of the prospectus directive calls for the setting up at this stage of a rapid consultation period, at least", emphasise the associations. The letter was signed by the European Banking Federation (EBF), the European Federation of Building Societies, European Association of Co-operative Banks, the European Association of Public Banks, Banking Federation of the European Union, European Savings Banks Group, the Federation of European Securities (FESE), COMITE EUROPEAN DES ASSURANCES.
