Brussels, 18/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission held an exceptional meeting in Luxembourg on Wednesday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) Treaty that expires on 23 July 2002.
In terms of work to be carried out, the College will be adopting a proposal by Commissioner David Byrne on health and safety standards when using human tissue; and a report by Commissioner Pedro Solbes assessing the eurozone's progress as part of the global economy over the first three years of EMU (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.9).
The President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, will be meeting with the Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker at the beginning of next week; and the Commission has been invited to dinner by the Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg.
