Parliament demands measures to prevent import of disease by tourists

Strasbourg, 17/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - By adopting a resolution on foot-and-mouth and the Football World Cup in South Korea, at the end of its emergency debate on Thursday, the European Parliament urges Member states to immediately step up control measures at EU airports on food imported by tourists from third countries, notably by making greater use of sniffer-dogs. It urges the Commission to draw up a precise strategy, with Member states, aimed at limiting the risks of tourists introducing foot-and-mouth. This strategy should comprise minimum standards for controls at EU borders and at its airports. These standards should be no less rigorous than the most rigorous standards applied in comparable countries.
