WTO to decide in second half of July

Brussels, 17/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - Following an initial (unofficial) postponement of the deadline last April, Geneva's ruling on the amount of sanctions the Union has the right to inflict on American traders in the so-called "FSC" affairs (tax relief on exports), is now expected for the second half of July. "We were given no reason. We are seeking the why and the how", sources in Brussels said on Monday. "The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has never put forward an official date. There is therefore no official explanation to give", sources at the institution's headquarters replied immediately. On this aspect of the dispute settlement procedure, the arbiters are not held to any regulatory deadline. They may, however, put forward indicative deadlines, that remain unofficial (see EUROPE of 14 June, p.12).
