Brussels, 31/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - During the meeting on Thursday with representatives of British authorities and the European Commission, France gave its assurance that it would soon be putting security measures in place in the Channel Tunnel. These measures are to palliate the difficulties caused by the attempts being made by refugees from the Sangatte centre to reach Great Britain by climbing on board freight trains in Fréthyn. France has undertaken to establish such measures (strengthened barriers, installation of infrared cameras, etc.) between "summer and the month of September". However, according to sources familiar with the issue, it has now put off this deadline until the end of the month of November. Further to complaints mainly filed by freight train operators, the Commission has called on France to take the measures required to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. Otherwise, it may initiate proceedings against France for breach of the legislation on free movement.
