31/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, the European Commission "welcomed" the recommendations made by the Turkish National Security Council on lifting the state of emergency in two provinces in the country's south east, on the abolition of the death penalty and on the broadcast of audio-visual programmes "in a language other than Turkish". The Commission is now waiting for these "positive signs (…) to take effect as quickly as possible". Implementation of these recommendations "will determine the substance and tone" of the interim report on Turkey that the Commission is to adopt in October with all the reports on enlargement, the spokesperson for the European Commission for enlargement Gunter Verheugen warned..
