Call to step up fight against xenophobia

Brussels, 28/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - "No trade off between human rights and security", states the Amnesty International annual report presented to the press on Tuesday and which, for 2001, denounces abuses ranging from extra-judicial executions in 47 countries, judicial executions in 27 countries, "disappearances" in 35 countries and torture and ill-treatment in 111 countries.

In Europe, AI is alarmed "by the atmosphere of suspicion and disregard of refugees and immigrants being encouraged by some European politicians and commentators", declared Dick Oosting, Director of Amnesty International EU Office in Brussels, adding: "At a time when the European Union is debating its own future, it must clearly re-state the human rights values it purports to hold dear", and step up the fight against xenophobia (Amnesty International in Brussels.
