Brussels, 27/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - On May 22, the European Parliament's Transport Committee approved the report tabled by Gilles Savary (France, PES) on the draft directive introducing harmonised standards that will enable Member States to impose movement restrictions on the movement of heavy goods vehicles on trans-European cross-border traffic at the weekends and bank holidays. The Committee requested the introduction of a European information mechanism enabling haulier operators to be informed of restrictions applied by Member States. In addition, it calls on the latter to provide for sufficient parking spaces and sanitary equipment in areas where hauliers have to stop. Other amendments provided exceptions for trucks carrying fresh flowers and agricultural products. The report will be debated on first reading at the plenary session in July.
