27/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - In a speech to the National Assembly in Benin during a visit as Co-President of the EU-ACP Parliamentary Assembly, British Labour MEP Glenys Kinnock made the following declaration on 16 May: (unofficial translation): "We have to tackle tariff barriers as one of our priorities, the restrictions to imports and agricultural subsidies, which often make it difficult for African farmers to sell their products on global markets. EU countries must apply what they recommend by cutting their customs barriers. Agricultural subsidies in OECD countries total $320 billion a year, equivalent to the GDP of the whole of Africa. Every cow bred in the EU is entitled to $2 dollars a day, in other words the same amount as 450 million sub-Saharan Africans have each day to survive on". Ms Kinnock also called for the debt to be dropped.
