Madrid Summit confirms strengthening of relations

Madrid, 21/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Troika of Heads of State and the Mexican President, Vincent Fox, met on Saturday in Madrid, following the EU/Latin America/Caribbean Summit. Five points where raised during this meeting, summarised the Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Maria Aznar: 1) assessment of results of associations agreement and free trade agreement in place for two years; 2) implementation of the "Panama Puebla" plan, which offers excellent opportunities for the development of Central America and southern Mexico (notably the Chiapas); 3) the situation of Latin American countries; 4) the assessment of the results of the Monterrey conference and preparations for the Johannesburg conference on sustainable development for which the parties are drafting a common position; 5) international security, the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking. This summit is an excellent example of what an Association Agreement may bring to the development of relations in the framework of the international agenda, felt Jose Maria Aznar. President Fox also underlined that the EU/Mexico agreement has lead to a 37% increase in trade, and also prepares for future progress. My meeting with the Danish Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, gives confidence in the continuity of the dialogue with the European Union, he said. He also invited the EU to support the Panama Pueblo plan, which will contribute towards accelerating integration in Central America and the development of regions that have remained behind, including southern Mexico. EUROPE will return to other meetings that took place in Madrid.
