Commission adopts five-year strategy

Brussels, 21/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - On 21 May, the European Commission adopted its strategy for cooperation with Pakistan for the period 2002-2006. The strategy covers all aspects of aid. Its main objectives are, on one hand, to support the efforts made by the government to reduce poverty and, on the other hand, facilitate the integration of the country in the world economy. Concerning the first objective, the Commission plans to act through support actions for basic education. As far as the second is concerned, it will focus its efforts on the diversification of trade, norms, quality control and WTO matters. The other areas of cooperation covered aim at the eradication of child labour, reform of the financial sector, the promotion of democracy and human rights, the fight against drug abuse, aid to uprooted people, and measures of conflict prevention. Recognising the role played by NGOs in the social development of the country, the Commission will continue to give them support. EUR 165 million will be allocated to the implementation of this strategy.
