Strasbourg, 16/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - In Strasbourg on Wednesday, the EP adopted (466 in favour, 1 against and 5 abstentions) the report by Heinz Hindermann (German, PES) approving a proposal of July 2000 aimed at tightening and simplifying the provisions governing the placing on the market of products of animal origin intended for human consumption. The EP did, however, adopt a few amendments to take account of the latest developments in BSE (compulsory screening of cattle aged over 30 months before being placed on the market), foot-and-mouth (introduction of adequate traceability procedures of products of animal origin) and of contamination of food by dioxins (render public any refusal by a Member State of accepting on its territory, during a food scare, of officials of the Food and Veterinary Office to proceed with inspections). The EP urges the Commission to draw up a list of infringements that may be the subject of criminal or administrative sanctions, so as to avoid distortions to competition, and also demands the publication of names of people whose places of production are incriminated for failing to respect rules of hygiene.
