Modification of controls of salmonella and zoonosis, to give greater weight to combating resistance to antibiotics

Strasbourg, 16/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - By adopting on first reading (co-decision), in Strasbbourg on Wednesday, two reports by Marit Paulsen (Swedish, ELDR) on combating salmonella and other types of zoonosis, the EP amended the Commission's August 2001 proposal to give greater weight to combating resistance to antibiotics in different types of bacteriological zoonosis. It thus intends pointing out that the use of an antibiotic, when not essential, should be avoided.

Parliament amended these proposals so that programmes , when not essential, should be avoided.

Parliament amended these proposals so that programmes in the fight against salmonella (which initially only concerned poultry and eggs) should also apply to other livestock (pigs, sheep, calves) and vegetable products. It also calls on the Commission to present programmes to combat campylobacteria, and that Member States whose programmes have not been approved in the given time be sanctioned, by prohibiting them from selling certain products on the internal market. The other amendments provide for: - early detection of these diseases; - regular controls, in premises used by farmers, must also concern animal feed (and not only the food sector); - before being able to put control programmes in place, Member states taking account of the economic consequences for SMEs.
