According to Mr Yilmaz, Turkey should make proposals on Cyprus

Athens, 13/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Greek press agency ANA asserts that, a few days before the arrival of Kofi Annan in Cyprus, on 14 May, the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz qualified as inadequate the proposals made by the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on the future of the island. "If Mr Rauf Denktash wants to help Turkey he should behave in a more conciliatory way", said Mr Yilmaz according to ANA, adding that Turkey should make new proposals based "on parameters which are acceptable by Europe and the international community". Mr Yilmaz, continues ANA, underlined that "Turkey has already responded to 90 percent of obligations it has undertaken towards the EU" and that "if it succeeds in responding to the rest, the only obstacle remaining in the path to Europe will be the Cyprus issue". If "southern Cyprus" joins the EU, "the number of troops Turkey will have to maintain in Cyprus will be bigger than the number of Turkish Cypriots", added the Minister as a warning, according to ANA.
