GDP down in fourth quarter of 2001

Luxembourg, 08/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - According to the estimates published on Tuesday by Eurostat, Gross Domestic Product in the eurozone and the EU15 (the EU as a whole) fell by 0.2% and 0.1% respectively in the last quarter of 2001. Compared with the last quarter of 2000, GDP in the eurozone and EU15 increased by 0.6% and 0.7%. In 2001, GDP in the eurozone grew by 1.5% and EU15 GDP by 1.6%, after +3.4% for the eurozone and +3.3% for EU15 in 2000. Eurostat compares these figures with the US, where the economy recorded a 0.4% increase in GDP I the fourth quarter of 2001, after a 0.3% drop in the third quarter. In Japan, the economy recorded another fall in GDP in the fourth quarter of 2001: -1.2% after -0.5% in the previous quarter. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2000, GDP in the US rose by 0.5%, but fell by 1.9% in Japan.
