Brussels, 03/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - British Liberal-Democrat, Andrew Duff, deputy chair of the EU/Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, has called on the President of the European Parliament, Pat Cox, to meet the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash when he visits Cyprus on 9 May. Mr. Duff, who is in Istanbul this Saturday, reiterated his invitation to the EU to become more pro-active is helping reach a settlement on the island, and suggested launching a "new screening process with the full involvement of the Turkish Cypriot side". In addition, he called on the High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana to go to the island to "assess the security situation for himself", and also proposed appointing a Turkish Cypriot observer to the European Convention (where, you may recall, Cyprus and Turkey already have members)
