Summit focuses on Middle East and combating terrorism

Washington, 02/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - Peace in the Middle East and the fight against terrorism were the focus of the United States/EU Summit held in Washington on 2 May. At the time of going to press, the summit had not yet drawn to a close. It was not to adopt the usual common declarations in accordance with the decision to make this kind of summit less heavy and more streamlined. On the subject of the Middle East, EU Council President Josep Piqué, who was taking part, in Washington, in the second meeting of the Quartet formed in Madrid on 10 April, hoped that one could even envisage a peace conference that would "conclude the process once and for all". Javier Solana, also present at the meeting, stressed in an article for The Wall Street Journal that the "shared vision is of the peaceful coexistence of two states within recognised and secure frontiers". Condoleeza Rice, White House National Security Adviser, remarked that the "common and fundamental interests and values" between the EU and the United States "far outweigh our differences". She spoke of the fight against terrorism: "When people are trying to kill you (…) other disputes (…) even important issues like the environment, suddenly look a bit different. They look like policy differences, not fundamental clashes of values", she said.
